I love colour…strong vivid jewel tones of teal, and fuschia, brilliant oranges, deep purple and acid green. I work primarily with natural textiles of silk, linen and cotton which are handpainted and dyed, silk screened or digitally printed. Simple shapes are printed, reconfigured and fused, machine or hand stitched, embellished with beads, buttons and found objects to create many layers of bright colours.
When I begin a collage piece I gather different fabrics, ribbon, thread and beads and add and subtract as I progress…there is an idea, but no real plan. I work intuitively to create a kaleidoscope of shapes and colour which form the background fabric. Once the background is complete I manipulate the surface further with embellishments. I enjoy the contemplative process of hand stitching and beading which is placed randomly.
My architectural and graphic design background influences many pieces with the frequent inclusion of buildings and text. Recent explorations with felting and the infinite possibilities of colour layering have led to a wearable series including oversized flower pins, arms cuffs and wraps.
I enjoy exploring different textile processes; whether it’s a wall piece, soft furnishings or wearables, vivid colour and surface embellishment are constants.
